2025 South African Krugerrand 1/10oz Gold Coin
The Krugerrand holds the distinction of being the world’s most widely owned and actively traded gold bullion coin. Its introduction in the late 1960s coincided with South Africa producing nearly three quarters of the western world’s annual gold supply. After the collapse of the Gold Standard in 1971, the Krugerrand became the primary means of encouraging private gold investment on a global scale.
History and Development
Created by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in collaboration with the South African Reserve Bank and the South African Mint, the first Krugerrand was struck on 3 July 1967. It was also the first gold coin to be denominated by weight in ounces, setting a precedent for the bullion market worldwide.
Key Features
Although recognised as legal tender, the Krugerrand does not carry a face value. Instead, its worth is tied directly to the market price of gold, ensuring transparency and confidence for buyers. Struck in 22 karat gold, the coin was intentionally mass produced to make gold ownership accessible to everyday investors. Since its launch, more than 50 million Krugerrands across various sizes have been issued, establishing its reputation as one of the most iconic and trusted bullion coins ever produced.
